Disabled User Tester

AbilityNet provides accessibility related user testing & user research services to a wide range of customers, and we are interested in individuals over the age of 18 with disabilities / impairments (or comparable traits & experiences) to join our network of user testers.

As a user tester you would be invited to participate in opportunities on an ad-hoc basis, if you meet the recruitment criteria for the opportunity. Our user testers help us make the world a more accessible place and are provided with financial compensation for their time & insight.

Position: Digital Accessibility Services: Disabled User Tester

Location: London and Remote (we accept applications from anywhere in the UK).

Employment Status: Self-employed (Please note that frequency of work as a user tester is not guaranteed and rates of pay may vary between projects).

What does participating as a user tester involve?

When invited to participate in an opportunity, we would provide you with some specific details of what that opportunity would involve, and you would then be able to choose if you’d be interested in participating in that specific opportunity.

Generally, our user tester opportunities involve either:

  • User Testing – this generally involves a member of our team guiding you through an app, website or product and you’d be asked to provide feedback of your experience throughout the session.
  • Questionnaires (which would be provided digitally as a link).
  • Focus Groups / Group Discussions. These sessions may either be with other user testers or the Client’s Staff.
  • General User Research.

In your application we will ask you to confirm which of these project types you would be interested in receiving invitations for.

Where do the user tester opportunities take place?

Depending on the specific opportunity, user tester sessions will be conducted either:

  • Remotely (via Zoom)
  • In our London office (Worship Street, London)
  • Onsite (i.e., at a location other than our London office)

As part of the invitation for an opportunity, we would specify either the address for the opportunity or if it is being conducted remotely.

In your application we will ask you to confirm which of these project locations you would be interested in receiving invites for.

Our remote sessions take place over Zoom video call (as default). If the opportunity involves testing an application, website or similar, we will ask that you use the ‘Screen Share’ function so that we can observe your interactions with the content being tested. Likewise, we will ask you to have your camera on, so that we can observe any physical, non-verbal and/or device-related interactions with the content being tested.

Rates of Pay

For user testing, focus groups or general user research, the length of the session will typically be between 1 – 2 hours. For these opportunity types, participants would typically be paid between £40 - £75 per hour, depending on the opportunity (unless otherwise specified).

Additionally, we typically cover travel expenses up to £30 (unless otherwise agreed / specified).

Note: You would be advised of the length of the session as part of the invite to participate.

For questionnaires, respondents would typically be paid £15 (unless otherwise specified).
