Frequently asked questions about accessibility strategy

How does accessibility strategy help embed accessibility in business as usual?

Accessibility strategy helps organisations move from reactive activity to more deliberate, planned progress.

It brings clarity to priorities, helps teams understand their role, and supports decisions that allow accessibility to be maintained over time rather than revisited repeatedly.

What do you mean by “embed accessibility in business as usual”?

Embedding accessibility in business as usual means making accessibility part of everyday decisions, processes and ways of working, rather than treating it as a one‑off project or an occasional check.

In practice, this means accessibility is considered during planning, design, procurement and delivery — not added later in response to issues or complaints.

How does this differ from running an accessibility audit or making individual improvements?

Audits and improvements usually focus on identifying issues in specific digital products. They look at what you've already built and finds things you need to fix or improve.

Havng an Accessibility Strategy helps you understand how that work fits into a wider approach, so accessibility becomes something that is built in from the start and sustained over time, not repeatedly fixed.

When do organisations start thinking about embedding accessibility in business as usual?

Many organisations reach this point when accessibility starts to feel fragmented, hard to prioritise, or dependent on a small number of individuals.

It is also common when teams want confidence that effort and investment are leading to long‑term improvement, not just short‑term fixes.

Do we need a fully defined strategy before taking action?

No. Most organisations already have activity underway.

Strategy support helps bring structure to existing work, so future decisions support embedding accessibility rather than creating additional complexity.

It's good to have senior buy-in to make sure the Accessibility Strategy is embedded in the organisation's overall deciosn-making, but that may be the next step, after you've started building a strategy for the first time.

How does this relate to the Digital Accessibility Maturity Model?

Many organisations use the Digital Accessibility Maturity Model (DAMM) to understand how mature their current approach is.

Strategy support can help reflect on DAMM findings and decide how to move from insight to action, supporting accessibility becoming part of business as usual.

What role does AbilityNet play in this process?

We crated the DAMM as a flexible tool to help build a strategy, identify next steps in your roadmap.

We work alongside organisations as they use this model to embed accessibility into everyday practice.

Our role is to support decision‑making, offer independent expertise where it is helpful, and help teams build confidence as accessibility becomes part of how work is done.

Is accessibility consultancy strategy support flexible?

Yes. Support can range from light‑touch advice to more structured work, depending on what is useful at the time.

We tailor our involvement to your organisation’s needs, priorities, budget and timetable.

What if we are not sure what support we need?

We often find that the person contacting us isn't sure where to start.

If don't have any experience of working on an accessibility strategy it may help to download the DAMM and take a quick look at what issues it throws up for you.

When you contact us we will start with a short conversation to understand where you are now and what you are working towards, and then outline options for you to consider.
