Course overview

This course is part of a series during which AbilityNet’s workplace inclusion experts will provide a deep dive into the experiences of people of living with different disabilities and impairments.

Led by individuals with lived experience, we will share the common barriers that people encounter at work, in study and in day-to-day life, the kinds of assistive technologies and tools that people use to overcome these barriers and the steps that everyone can take to avoid creating barriers in the first place. 

The course is interactive and practical. It includes real life stories to help articulate how employing the social model of disability at your workplace or education institution can lead to a working or learning environment that embraces and welcomes everyone and is inclusive by design. 

Adam Tweed is AbilityNet's Innovation Consultant for Education & Workplace. A lover of all things tech, Adam firmly believes "if you can break it; it's been designed badly" and that “the best tech is the stuff you shouldn't need to think about.”

He has experienced periods of mental health challenges and has had a recent diagnosis of Generalised Anxiety Disorder. Adam uses his experiences to discuss and challenge the stigmas around the impact and taboos of mental health conditions.

He will discuss his mental health-related experiences and will provide a demonstration of the tech tools available to help manage mental health conditions.

  • In this session we will look at the barriers and difficulties associated with some common mental health conditions.
  • We will look at the lived experience of a mental health condition pre and post-diagnosis in terms of both benefit and barriers.
  • We will discuss the impact of technology and working practices in both helping and hindering the management of a mental health condition but also how the same considerations can impact a wider workforce of individuals who may be experiencing varying levels of stress and have equally varied levels of resilience, coping strategies and support networks.

Your trainer - Adam Tweed

Adam is a Senior Workplace and Education Consultant at AbilityNet. Adam has a BA in Film Studies, a BSc in Psychology and a career in IT in both the commercial and education sectors as well as also working as an assistant psychologist. A self-described jack-of-all-trades, Adam is a lover of all things tech and fascinated by design and how it dictates how well (or badly) people engage with technology. He believes that technology should be intuitive and that "if you can break it, it's been designed badly.
