Interview with Elly Smith - Sales Consultant Manager at AbilityNet

Please can you tell us a bit about yourself?

My name is Elly Smith, and I'm a Sales Consultant Manager at AbilityNet. At the time of writing this I've worked at AbilityNet for 4.5 years, and in my current role my main responsibilities include selling Digital Accessibility Services to new clients, managing the accounts of existing clients, managing the portfolio of services on behalf of the Sales Team and I'm line manager to three Sales Support Administrators.

What was your background prior to joining AbilityNet?

I graduated from the University of Leeds with a degree in Sociology. I spent a year working in a pub after graduation, whilst searching and applying for jobs, before I found AbilityNet. 

Can you tell us about your professional journey at AbilityNet? 

Not only have I had the chance to gain valuable experience and transferable skills at AbilityNet, but my commitment to my team and the charity have regularly been recognised. I joined AbilityNet as a Sales Support Co-ordinator, after 1.5 years I was promoted to a Sales Consultant, and I continued in this role through to April 2021 when I became Sales Consultant Manager. 

Who or what has supported you to develop in your career?

My managers at AbilityNet have always been instrumental in my growth over the years. Alongside the direct support from them, the Senior Management Team have always recognised my achievements and championed my progression. 

Where do you see yourself in 10 years time?

It's hard to say, but I can see a clear path of progression at AbilityNet, and I know the charity is very supportive of a good work-life balance. Knowing I can do meaningful work, progress professionally, but also pursue my interests outside of work is important to me.

What is AbilityNet to you?

AbilityNet is a chance to revisit things I learned at university, a place where I’ve made meaningful friendships and a safe space where I’m encouraged to grow.

What’s the best thing about working at AbilityNet?

It has to be the people. It's a very open place, where all voices are heard and people are supported by their colleagues both personally and professionally. I've made some great friendships here.
