What is the HE and FE Accessibility Maturity Model?

Created by AbilityNet and Alistair McNaught Consultancy, the Higher Education (HE) and Further Education (FE) Accessibility Maturity Model (HEMM) helps institutions assess their digital accessibility maturity.

It helps you:

  • Check how mature your digital accessibility is today
  • See the gaps that could cause legal or student experience risks, eg meeting Public Sector Bodies Accessibility Regulations
  • Agree clear next steps with colleagues across your organisation

How it works:

Answer a short set of questions and see where your organisation sits on the accessibility maturity scale. You can use it for:

  • Your whole institution
  • A course or department

No technical skills needed.

The model gives you a shared, clear picture, so accessibility becomes part of everyday work, not a last minute fix.

Amy Low from AbilityNet and Alistair McNaught Consultancy discuss the HEMM:
