Karen Elderton is 65, and lives in a small town called Morecambe, in Lancashire.

As a recipient of free digital support from the AbilityNet and BT Group partnership, Karen's life has been transformed.

Before receiving the guidance from AbilityNet, Karen says "The very thought of using a computer scared me. I felt like I did not have the skills needed."

Learn how to do online banking and emails

Karen attended AbilityNet's free digital skills group sessions organised by Places for People Living+ for the residents of its Matthias Court retirement housing facility.

"The sessions [with AbilityNet digital skills trainers Michelle and Darren] were great. Once I got to know everyone I felt more comfortable. Everyone was very supportive," says Karen.

"The main things I’ve enjoyed learning about are Facetime, online banking, emailing and more. I couldn’t do any of these before. I feel much more confident now. Everything was so helpful," she says.

Karen highlights that this service is in demand and so valuable for enhancing people's lives and closing the digital divide. "I feel without this service I would continue to struggle and get frustrated. It can affect my mental health," Karen says.

Having built up new digital skills through the free training, Karen is keen to continue to learn more and her next goal is to learn how to do her shopping online.

"I really enjoyed myself during the computer studying, I learned a lot. Both Darren and Michelle were amazing. So helpful, they put me at ease when I got stressed" - Julie Oldham, another attendee of the AbilityNet sessions at Matthais Court
