Support for digital inclusion through fundraising talks
Stu Mitchell (pictured), Lecturer at the Open University, has combined a passion for history with a commitment to digital inclusion in support of AbilityNet in the Brighton area. Through a series of creative charity talks, Stu has raised vital funds for AbilityNet and other Brighton-based charities.
Desire to address digital exclusion
In April 2020, during the challenges of the pandemic, Stu launched an event called 'Curious Histories' to fundraise for a local organisation. What began as a small initiative quickly grew into a regular event attracting over 50 attendees.
Frustrated by the increasing reliance on digital systems and apps, Stu recognised the barriers faced by those without access to technology. This sparked a desire to support local charities tackling digital exclusion, which led him to AbilityNet and Digital Brighton and Hove.
"It's really great that I am able to see the impact of the fundraising. I'm delighted that the money Curious Histories generates helps to buy devices for people in Brighton. Knowing where our donations go and being able to see tangible benefits locally is very important to me," says Stu.
Fascinating talks help delete the digital divide
The 'Curious Histories' fundraising talks have supported multiple causes, including Lost Cats of Brighton and Pelican Parcels. For AbilityNet, a recent talk on Medieval Funeral Rituals raised over £180.
