Despite being paralysed from the neck down Sean Kelly is a busy AbilityNet ITCanHelp volunteer, helping to find solutions to technical problems experienced by people with disabilities.
Sean is a 37-year old former electrician who was paralysed from the neck down after an accident during a gap year in Australia in 1998. In the years since his accident he has become an IT expert, and after mastering the technology for himself he decided to devote his time to supporting others who need help in the digital world.
As an AbilityNet ITCanHelp volunteer, Sean connects with a lot of different people who are experiencing difficulties with their technology. He's able to use his IT skills to support them – work which he enjoys immensely.
A man who also enjoys finding practical solutions to circumvent his paralysis; Sean uses a typing stick attached to his hand when he needs to type something quickly like a short email reply.
When it comes to sending text messages he has a slightly different approach - “Despite the sophistication of Apple's Siri and Google Voice, sometimes texting with my tongue is simply the quickest way to get the task done!”
