Embedding accessibility from the ground up at Amiqus

By partnering with AbilityNet to train its team, and making accessibility part of the shared language and daily decisions at Amiqus, the software company has now created a better user experience for everyone.

Amiqus logoAmiqus is a trusted compliance onboarding platform dedicated to providing secure and accessible solutions for individuals and organisations.

Accessibility is one of Amiqus’s core values. It aims to design inclusive products that can be used by everyone, regardless of ability. Having carried out multiple accessibility audits with AbilityNet, Amiqus has also consistently advocated for inclusive design practices across the company.

The project: Accessibility in Wallet

Motivation to work with AbilityNet

“Having previously worked with AbilityNet, we were familiar with the clarity and actionability of AbilityNet's advice," says Leila Kellgren, Senior User Researcher at Amiqus. "For this particular project, a brand new product, we saw an opportunity to embed accessibility from the outset, rather than retrofitting it later.”

“The goal was to make accessibility a foundational aspect of the product’s development,” Leila continues.

Identifying the challenges

“At the beginning of the project, our team’s understanding of accessibility was at an intermediate level,” says Leila, who recognised the need to enhance knowledge and build capacity within the team.

“We also wanted to ensure our mobile app team had tangible, actionable guidance they could learn from,” she says.

AbilityNet’s support

AbilityNet provided critical support by recommending an agile approach to integrating accessibility, as well as offering training sessions for the team to broaden their knowledge.

“This allowed us to learn incrementally from each build and apply those lessons across the product,” says the Amiqus team.

AbilityNet’s input helped Amiqus improve its workflow and make accessibility a continuous part of the development process, rather than a one-off checklist.

Outcomes and impact

The Amiqus team has resolved most of the accessibility issues raised by AbilityNet. Importantly, when a particular issue was identified in one area of the product, they worked proactively to fix it across all relevant areas.

This has led to a deeper understanding of accessibility within the team and encouraged more inclusive design and development from the beginning of every project.

Reflections and key takeaways

Amiqus’s two key takeaways from working with AbilityNet are:

  1. Flexibility and collaboration: “They were accommodating when builds weren’t ready and adapted to our development timeline.”
  2. Clarity and professionalism: “The guidance was always clear, professional, and friendly, making it easier for our teams to understand and act on.”

“Working with AbilityNet has been a genuinely positive experience,” says the team.

“From start to finish, AbilityNet’s consultants have been knowledgeable, approachable, and incredibly helpful. The format and content of their reports are particularly effective, making it easy for our teams to implement meaningful improvements. We look forward to continuing this valuable partnership,” Leila enthuses.

Inclusive design rollout

Looking ahead, Amiqus plans to complete all remaining accessibility improvements identified in the project. The organisation is also developing a broader accessibility strategy aligned with regulatory frameworks such as the European Accessibility Act

Amiqus continues with its goal to champion inclusive design and accessible digital identity solutions, ensuring that all of its products and services are inclusive for everyone.
